  1. The “zu” in “zuschalten” doesn’t actually mean “closed”. It is short for “dazu schalten” or “hinzuschalten”. If you translate “schalten” as “to switch” then zuschalten means “to switch on something IN ADDITION to something else”… for instance you have an electric generator but the power it delivers is not enough. Then, you might “zuschalten” your second generator.
    You cannot just “zuschalten” one thing if there is nothing it is added to. So the “zu” here has nothing to do with “closed”, it is the local “zu” as in “Ich gehe zu meiner Mutter”… by the way… the translation Leo offers really doesn’t get the essence
