  1. So, I’d say whenever “dort” works, “da” will work too but not the other way around. Why not? Because “da” can also mean “here”.

    – Ich bin bis Freitag nicht da.
    – I won’t be here until Friday.

    I think I use dort very rarely but I found this to be a regional thing. Generally I wouldn’t spend too much thought on it. You can’t really make bad mistakes so long as you use dort really only only for remote things (using da will do, too).
